16/08/2021: romance manga with tall girls

Yup... the title says it all! It's been a whirlwind start to the new semester for us, so please enjoy this short little post about a very niche sub-genre. Maybe you like short guys, or maybe you like tall girls, or maybe you just like cute romance stories!

1) Do You Like Big Juniors?

Standard school romcom with a short senior and a tall junior on the volleyball team. There’s almost no depth to this manga but it’s funny enough for a laugh every now and then.

2) Lovely Complex

An early shoujo romcom about a tall girl and a short boy going out. It’s fairly well-written and it’s in the classic shoujo manga style. Lots of jokes and a sweet relationship. There's also an anime adaptation which was extremely popular in its day.

It's a really good anime!

3) Ookiku Nattara Kekkon Suru!

A boy refuses to confess to his childhood friend (who’s a year older) despite them and their families being on very good terms because he made a promise to get married only when his height overtook hers. She doesn’t mind at all, but he’s got a real complex about his height (but not like in a bad Napoleon way, it’s funny). Nevertheless, they all have fun together and they slowly get even closer. The art is really clean and nice and I really like the supporting characters like the girl's brothers (who are extremely supportive and proactive in playing cupid to their would-be brother-in-law).

It's incredibly sweet and a lot better than it has any right to be.

4) Fujiyama-san wa Shishunki

A sweet, funny but profound romcom-slice-of-life about a pair of childhood friends (obviously the girl is really tall and the boy is of normal height) in middle school, focusing on their very juvenile romance as they start going out. The art is outstanding and the writing really brings the emotions across. An outstanding series that I heartily recommend!

It's surprisingly emotional and really captures the feeling of growing up when you're like 14, which is kind of right before you start thinking you're a grown up at age 15 or so. Not many stories manage to do that for me!

5) Hitomi-chan is Shy with Strangers

There’s not that much romance in it and it’s more of a comedic slice-of-life. Basically, it’s just that this tall girl with scary looks is very shy and somehow makes friends with a short guy who’s a year older. This is another series which I feel doesn’t have any substance but is somehow still popular. I prefer entry (1) over this, but you should give it a try.

6) Until the Tall Kouhai (♀) and the Short Senpai (♂) Relationship Develops into Romance

Same old… same old… However, I like the art in this series! The way her hair is drawn reminds me a lot of Clare from Claymore and her predecessor Ikuno Shirataki from Angel Densetsu. For some reason, my app always glitches out when I read this series...
