13/01/2020: TOP ANIME SEQUELS OF 2020

Year of the Rat? No, 2020 is the year of anime sequels. Japan has decided to start the decade off right by reviving some of the most HYPE anime series of the 2010s.

1) Attack on Titan Final Season (Fall 2020)

AOT is indisputably a strong contender for Anime of the Decade – powerful storytelling, easily-relatable emotions, and breathtaking animated fight scenes. It is a fan-favorite amongst both weebs and normies alike. In the 3rd season, the story has taken a mind-bending twist from a simple kill-all-titans-to-save-mankind scenario to a shit-the-whole-world-is-alive-and-ourenemy. Eren posits killing all their enemies across the shore. Is this possible – ethically and practically? Behold as Studio Wit shall bring upon us divine-class animation in the end story this fall.

2) My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected – S3 (Spring 2020)

FIVE YEARS since Season 2 ended with the god-awful cliffhanger. The absolute GOAT of all romcoms (romantic comedies) is back after light novel author Wataru Watari finally decides that he is finished milking the series and released the final Volume 14. Let us witness once again Hachiman’s pursuit for the Genuine Thing (本物 honmono) – will he be successful in saving Yukino and resolving their co-dependency issue, without sacrificing any of their friendships? Yui or Yukino end? Or even, loner end? No words can describe the complexity and intricacies of the lovetriangle except by watching yourself the pristine animation and voice-acting that is sure to leave one in tears.

3) Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World – S2 (Spring 2020)

FOUR YEARS since Season 1 ended. The KING of 異 世界Isekai (different world) genre returns once more to highlight more of Subaru’s suffering for our utmost viewing pleasure. What is the Witch of Envy, Satella’s purpose for Subaru? What exactly is Subaru’s Return-By-Death ability? Hopefully, Season 2 shall shed some light. Watch out Rem fans, Emilia shall prove why she is best girl this season.

4) Kaguya-Sama: Love is War – S2 (Spring 2020)

Season 1 ended with Reddit’s discussion thread for Ep 12 being awarded 172 Platinum, 178 Gold and 310 Silver. ‘Nuff said about how much Kaguya-sama is loved. It’s back with the same crew and new characters to be introduced. Can Studio A-1 Pictures keep up the amazing work after blowing their budget on hiring Japan’s king of love songs Masayuki Suzuki to sing the opening song and animating the viral 60 fps Chika dance? Do look forward to best (edgy) boy Ishigami’s character development.

Other honorable sequels include: The Irregular at Magic High School S2, Shirobako movie, Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul (movie), The Quintessential Quintuplets S2, Haikyuu S4, The Promised Neverland S2, Ascendance of a Bookworm S2, Dr Stone S2, Fire Force S2 and Shield Hero S2.

2020 is truly a blessed year for sequels as the anime industry continues to expand in the new decade.
