Singapore’s 55 years old now and has definitely come a long way since independence. As Singaporeans we take great pride in our country, and as Singaporean Weeaboos we take even more pride when Singapore gets featured in anime! Here are 5 notable times Singapore has been featured in anime:
1. Detective Conan: The Fist Of Blue Sapphire

After a visit to Singapore as a guest at the Singapore Writer’s Festival in 2016, Gosho Ao-yama, the creator of Detective Conan, was inspired to set his film in Singapore. This movie features many local landmarks, including the Merlion, Marina Bay Sands and Maxwell Food Centre.
2. Cardfight Vanguard

The main cast of Cardfight Vanguard actually travelled down to Singapore to take part in the Singapore stage of the VF circuit. While it did feature many of our landmarks accurately, it did make some pretty hilarious but welcoming changes as well. In the Vanguard world, the Singapore Institute of Technology was a university that specialized in the card game and the Singapore Government had a special scheme to train the brightest students as card fighters. One can only wish these were real ☹.
3. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders

On the search for Dio, our boys Jotaro and gang ended up spending 3 whole episodes in Singapore! The fact that our country was featured in Jojo aside (which brings tears to our eyes), what makes this really memorable is the fact that the all famous lerolero moment happened in our very own Sentosa cable cars.

4. Plastic Memories

While note directly featuring our island nation, the setting of Plastic Memories is heavily based of Singapore and makes constant references to our landmarks. See Issue 1 for our full feature on this beautiful and heart-wrenching series!
5. A Place Further Than The Universe

Out of all the Singapore features we’ve listed, this is the one that truly warms the cockles of our hearts.
This slice-of-life series follows four moe high-school girls as they journey through the world on a mission to travel to Antarctica. In episode 6, the gang makes a stop in Singapore and tours the country, trying local delicacies and visiting key landmarks. The detailed depiction of not just our typical landmarks, but food (chicken rice, durian) and facilities (SQ entertainment interface, Cheers, Orchard Hotel) as well truly makes us feel nationalistic pride as Singaporeans.
Happy birthday Singapore and have a good public holiday! Keep tuning in to our website for more articles even as the term starts back up!
